24 Infrastructure flagship projects are expected to complete before Duterte’s term

MANILA, Philippines – Before the end of President Duterte’s term in 2022, the Philippine government is expected to build 24 additional infrastructure flagship projects (IFPs) worth PHP194.78 billion.

“The 24 projects are estimated to generate more than 300,000 jobs between 2017 to 2022,” the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) said.

These projects are part of the Duterte administration’s “Build, Build, Build” program which creates thousands of projects around the nation.

According to the NEDA, the construction on 12 of these projects totaling PHP67.068 billion is now underway and is expected to be completed by June 2021.

The PHP23.3 billion North Luzon Expressway-South Luzon Expressway (NLEX-SLEX) link road project, as well as the PHP12.64 billion C5 South Link Expressway project, are among the 112 IFPs approved projects by the NEDA Board last May 12 of the current year.

By March 2022, the IFPs project of the eight-kilometer all elevated four-lane toll highway linking the NLEX southward from C3 Road Caloocan City to PUP Sta. Mesa, Manila, and connecting to the Skyway Stage 3 and largely spanning the Philippine National Railways (PNR) rail track is expected to be finished.

Here are some of the IFPs projects in Duterte’s administration.

  • 7.5 billion Flood Risk Management Project (FRIMP)
    • in Cagayan, Tagoloan, and Imus Rivers
  • 5.44 billion Malitubog-Maridagao irrigation project
  • 4.8-billion Bicol International Airport Development Project
    • in New Legazpi

The NEDA also announced that seven (7) flagship projects worth PHP39.94 billion that was authorized as part of the IFP list in 2017, 2019, and 2020 had been completed. In connection with these, the Cabinet secretaries were reported that more than 200 airport projects, more than 400 seaport projects, more than 10,000 flood mitigation structures, more than 26,000 kilometers of road, and more than 5,500 bridges had already been completed.

Some of the “Build, Build, Build” projects are currently under construction, these include 102 airport projects, 117 seaport projects, 1,090.30 kilometers of railway, 2,587 flood mitigation structures, 2,515 kilometers of roads, and 1,020 bridge projects.

“This has the biggest multiplier in terms of job. One job that you create in the infrastructure sector creates another 0.5 jobs. Every peso you spend in construction creates another peso because of the services around the construction. That’s why we are pursuing this,” said Chua, who is also NEDA chief.
