A military plane carrying 85 people crashed in Sulu on July 4, 2021

MANILA, Philippines – A Philippine military plane carrying at least 85 people crashed in Patikul, Sulu on Sunday, July 4, the armed forces’ chief said.

To quote from PAF statement,

“A C-130 aircraft of the Philippine Air Force with tail #5125 figured in a mishap upon landing in Jolo. The said aircraft  took off from CJVAB to Lumbia Airport and subsequently ferried personnel to Jolo.”

General Cirilito Sobejana told AFP that so far, 40 out of 85 people have been rescued from the burning and wreckage of the C-130 which crashed while trying to land on the island of Jolo in Sulu province.

Most of the 85 passengers had recently graduated from basic military training and were deployed to the captivating island as part of a joint task force to fight terrorism in the predominantly Muslim region.

The military has a heavy presence in the southern Philippines where militants groups operate, including the Abu Sayyaf kidnap-for-ransom.
