MANILA, Philippines – Hidilyn Diaz, a Filipina weightlifter, won the women’s 55-kg weightlifting event of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics on Monday, giving her country its first Olympic gold medal.
Diaz won the gold medal with a total score of 224, beating China’s Liao Qiuyun at the Tokyo International Forum.

With 94 and 97 kg. respectively, the 30-year-old Olympian cleared her first and second tries at snatch. On her third attempt at 99kg, she had received a no-lift ruling.
Diaz lifts 119 kg on her first try and 124 kilograms on her second attempt. In her third attempt, she lifted 127 pounds successfully.
In 2016, Diaz won a silver medal in the Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and a gold medalist at the 2019 Southeast Asian Games.
