PAGASA Weather Update January 3, 2023: Trough of LPA Continues Affect Visayas and Mindanao, and Northeast Monsoon Still Affecting Luzon

MANILA, Philippines – The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) releases the latest weather update.

Forecast Weather Conditions

There is currently no Tropical Cyclone within and outside of the country. However, the Low-Pressure Area (LPA) trough is still being observed.

Visayas, Caraga, Davao Region, Northern Mindanao, Zamboanga Peninsula, and Palawan will be experiencing “cloudy skies with scattered rainshowers and thunderstorms” due to the trough of LPA. This weather condition will cause “possible flash floods or landslides due to moderate to, at times, heavy rains.”

The Northeast Monsoon will continue to affect Luzon, giving varying effects to several areas. Visayas, Caraga, Davao Region, Northern Mindanao, Zamboanga Peninsula, and Palawan will have “cloudy skies with scattered rainshowers and thunderstorms,” bringing “possible flash floods or landslides due to moderate to at times heavy rains.” The rest of Luzon will be experiencing “partly cloudy to cloudy skies with light rains,” bringing ” no significant impact” on the land area.

Lastly, the rest of Mindanao will have “partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rainshowers or thunderstorms” due to the trough of LPA and localized thunderstorms. Residents should also look for “possible flash floods or landslides during severe thunderstorms.

Wind and Coastal Water Conditions

Luzon will experience moderate to strong winds moving to the northeast. The condition of its coastal water will remain moderate to rough (1.2 to 4.0 meters).

Visayas and Mindanao can expect moderate to strong winds from the east to the northeast, with moderate to rough coastal water conditions (1.2 to 3.0 meters).
