Pfizer and AstraZeneca shots are proven effective against Delta Variant

MANILA, Philippines – Shots from Pfizer and AstraZeneca’s Covid-19 vaccines have shown to be more effective against the highly contagious Delta coronavirus variant, study finds on Wednesday.

The Public Health England study on the effectiveness of COVID-19 vaccines made by Pfizer-BioNTech and Oxford-AstraZeneca which was based on real-world data, was published on Wednesday in the New England Journal of Medicine.

According to the research released on Wednesday by the New England Journal of Medicine, two doses of Pfizer’s vaccines were 88 percent effective in avoiding symptomatic illness from the Delta variants, compared to 93.7 percent for the Alpha variant, which is similar to what was previously reported.

Other story

Meanwhile, two (2) doses of AstraZeneca vaccines were found 67 percent effective against the highly contagious Delta variants, and 74.5 percent effective against the Alpha variant, compared from a previous estimate of 66 percent.

“Only modest differences in vaccine effectiveness were noted with the Delta variant as compared with the Alpha variant after the receipt of two vaccine doses,” Public Health England Researchers said.

However, the researchers said that a single shot of each vaccine is not enough to provide adequate protection. In fact, according to the research, the first dose of either vaccine is 33 percent effective against the Delta variant.

Also, the Public Health of England said that one shot of Pfizer vaccine was about 36 percent effective and one shot of AstraZeneca vaccine was 30% effective.

To quote from Public Health of England ,

“Our finding of reduced effectiveness after the first dose would support efforts to maximize vaccine uptake with two doses among vulnerable groups in the context of circulation of the Delta variant,”
