Manila, Philippines – The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) announced a magnitude 6.6 earthquake struck 16 kilometers southwest of Calatagan, Batangas on July, 24, 2021 (Saturday) morning.
The Philvocs said that the epicenter of the earthquake hit at around 4:49 a.m. had a depth of 116 kilometers and it was caused by a tectonic in origin.
The Philvocs was first reported as a magnitude 6.7 earthquake, however, this was later revised to magnitude 6.6.
Due to the depth of the earthquake, Phivolcs Director Renato Solidum Jr. explained that the earthquake was due to the movement of the Manila Trench. He also said that no possible threat of a tsunami or tidal wave.
To quote:
“Ang lindol kaninang 4:48 ng madaling araw ay sanhi ng pagkilos ng Manila Trench.… Walang kinalaman ito sa Taal Volcano,” said Solidum, who was asked if the quake was related to the Taal Volcano unrest.
Aftershock was occurred at around 4:57 a.m. that struck in the same areas of Batangas with a magnitude of 5.1 and a depth of 107 kilometers.
The tremor was felt in Metro Manila, other areas of Luzon, and the Visayas.
