MANILA, Philippines – In a Facebook post dated May 17, 2021, the Philippine National Police (PNP) said that there are now 61 deaths in the department due to COVID-19.
The 61st fatality is a 39 year old police staff sergeant assigned in Rizal.
According to PNP Health Service, the police was undergone swab test and later tested positive in Covid-19 on May 10, 2021. The cop was admitted on the same day to the hospital due to fever and difficulty in breathing.
He was diagnosed with a Chronic Kidney Disease and undergone with emergency dialysis.
Last Sunday, May 16, 2021, he suffered from difficulty of breathing and was advised to have another session of dialysis by the attending physician. Monday, May 17, he later on pronounced dead by his attending physician.
PNP Chief Guillermo Eleazar expressed his condolences to the bereave family of the police officer.
To quote from PNP Chief Eleazar statement,
“Nais kong ipaabot ang taos-pusong pakikiramay sa pamilya ng ating pulis na namatay dahil sa Covid-19. Handa po ang PNP sa anumang tulong na inyong kailangan”
As of May 17, 2021, there were 69 new reported additional cases of Covid-19 in PNP department bringing the total number of cases to 21,924. 85 were recorded new recoveries. Complete details are presented in the table below.

The number of active cases in the Philippines has continuously went down to 54,235 with only 5,979 new recorded cases on Monday, May 17, the lowest recorded active and new cases since March 2021.

DOH likewise reminded the public to practice the use of protective measures such as wearing mask and wearing face shield.
