MANILA, Philippines – Davao City Mayor Sara “Inday” Duterte has announced on Tuesday, November 9, that she has formally withdrawn her certification of candidacy (COC) for reelection as Davao City mayor in next year’s elections, seeking to run for a higher position.
Mayor Sarah posted the announcement on her official Facebook page.
“Ngayong hapon wini-withdraw ko ang aking kandidatura sa pagka-mayor ng Davao City. Si VM Baste ang papalit sa akin. Ito lamang po muna. Maraming salamat po,” she said.
The mayor added that her brother Vice Mayor Sebastian “Baste” Duterte will run for the city’s top post in the upcoming election to replace her. Baste also withdrew his candidacy for vice mayor in Davao City.
City councilor Atty. Melchor Quitain has been nominated as Baste’s replacement for the vice mayoral bid.
“Si Atty. Melchor Quitain ang nominado namin sa pagka-Bise Alkalde. Ito lamang po muna. Maraming salamat po,” she added.
The announcement of Mayor Sarah Duterte was “unexpected,” according to Atty. Melchor Quitain Jr., the vice mayoralty candidate in Davao City who replaced Sebastian.
Sara, who had led early presidential choice polls, had sparked speculation that she might still run for a higher position despite constantly stating that she would run for reelection.
Recently, Sara met with two presidential candidates: Bongbong Marcos, the son of former President Ferdinand Marcos, who has yet to choose a running mate, and the other is Ronald “Bato” Dela Rosa, who was a close ally of her father, President Rodrigo Duterte and a standard-bearer of PDP-Laban.
Sara didn’t even say which post she’d like to run for in the 2022 election.
