Tokyo Olympics: Nesthy Petecio on the way to Gold

MANILA, Philippines – Nesthy Petecio, a Filipina boxer is just one victory away from being the Philippines’ first Olympic boxing gold medalist.

Petecio knocked out Irma Testa of Italy in the women’s featherweight round at the Tokyo Olympics on Saturday at Kokugikan Arena, her first fight against a substantially taller opponent.

She received a score of 29-28 from four judges, while Testa received a score of 29-28 from the fifth judge. She advanced to the final round by defeating Italy’s Irma Testa in a 4-1 split decision in the semifinals.

Petecio will compete for gold on Tuesday, August 3, bringing the Philippines another set of the gold medals after Hidilyn Diaz won gold in weightlifting on Monday.

Philippines on winning Gold

Philippines clinched it first Gold medal in history of Olympics through Hidilyn Diaz last Monday, July 26.

Hidilyn won the women’s 55-kg weightlifting event of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

Diaz won the gold medal with a total score of 224, beating China’s Liao Qiuyun at the Tokyo International Forum.

If Nesthy wins, she will become the country’s second gold medalist at the Tokyo Olympics after nearly 100 years of trying to reach the top spots.
