Victor Wood “Jukebox King”, dead at 74 due to COVID

MANILA, Philippines – Victor Wood or also known as the “Jukebox King of the Philippines” or “Plaka King” died at 74 due to Covid-19 complications this Friday morning, April 23, 2021.

According to his wife Nerissa through a report from ABS-CBN, Victor Wood admitted in the New Era Hospital Thursday, April 22 because of his asthma. Evening on Thursday, the singer tested Positive in Covid-19 and have a complication in lungs (pneumonia).

He was intubated  because of unstable blood pressure and low oxygen level. On April 23, Friday  morning, he passed away at the age of 74.

To quote from the ABS-CBN’s statement of Victor’s wife, Nerissa,

Nagpapasalamat ako sa lahat ng nagmamahal kay Victor Wood, at sa pamamahal ng INC para sa amin. Sa mga kaibigan na laging andyan at sa mga anak niya na kahit malayo ay karamay ko at sa mga fans, salamat sa walang sawang suporta. Nawala man siya, mananatili ang kanyang mga kanta.

English Translation: We are very thankful for your love with Victor Wood, and the love of INC (Iglesia ni Kristo) for us. To all friends who are always there, to his children, though far but always in support, as well as to all fans, our sincerest thanks. He might be lost but his songs will still remain.


Aside from being a singer, Wood has also been a politician and an actor.

He started in his music career in the 1970’s and has popularized the songs entitled “I’m sorry my love”, “Mr. Lonely”, “One more chance”, “Carmelita”, among others.

He starred in few movies in the 1970s. Among these are “Mr. Lonely” directed by Leonardo Garcia, “I went to your wedding”, directed by Maning Songco, “One More Chane”, directed by Jose Wenceslao, among others.

He later entered in the world of politics and ran under Kilusang Bagong Lipunan Party as a Senator but lost. In 2013, he tried again but was disqualified by the Commission on Elections (COMELEC). He also attempted to ran for Governor and Congressman but likewise failed.
